A few days ago, I was talking with a new friend. As we were getting to know one another, certain inevitable questions came up, the ones we all ask. Where do you live? Are you married? Do you have kids? Do you like Denmark? What do you do for work?
I explained that I create peg dolls. Of course there was a pause. I have to explain to most what in the world a peg doll is and how I create them. I pulled out my phone and flashed some pictures of some of my recent creations. Then they paused and asked “Why do you make them?” Now that was a question I rarely am asked. Most people say cool, or change the subject when I start going on and on about creating peg dolls. But being asked “why?” through me for a bit of a loop.
It is an amazing question. And I thought I would share my answer here.
I create peg dolls because I love the look on my children’s faces when they play with something I made for them.
I create peg dolls because I love the challenge of creating something that will be treasured, played with, cared for, left in the mud occasionally.
I create peg dolls because I love making art, and peg dolls called to me.
I create peg dolls because it’s fun and makes me happy, and if I can create an income for my family from doing something that makes me happy, I feel that I made it as a human being.
That’s the main reason why I love creating peg dolls. I get the combination of supporting my family, exercising my creativity and making something wonderful for you and yours to treasure. Creating peg dolls is a new adventure for me, I have not been doing it for very long. But I love every minute of it, even when stressed between deadlines. I hope to continue to create wonderful peg dolls for you and yours for a long time.
It probably isn’t the most profound answer, but it’s my truth. A lot of what I do in my life is for my family and for my happiness, and when I get the rare opportunity to combine the two, I feel like I am a successful person.
